THE GONE HAPTICS: William Gibson reads first chapter of his new novel The Peripheral

gibson_gone_haptics

They didn’t think Flynn’s brother Burton had PTSD but that sometimes the gone haptics would glitch him, they said it was like phantom limb, ghosts of the tattoos he had worn in the war, put there to tell him when to run, when to be still, when to do the bad-ass dance, which direction, what range, so they allowed him some disability for that, and he lived in the trailer by the creek. An alcoholic uncle had lived there before, a veteran of some other war, their father’s older brother.

There's a relatively recent video out there with William Gibson at the New York Public Library, reading the first chapter (entitled The Gone Haptics) of his upcoming novel The Peripheral, and what you just hopefully read in the blockquote is the first sentence. Or the first few, depending on how exact the transcript is. The Gone Haptics also confuses me, bringing me back to wasp nets, military implants and post-war trailer reality oozing Agrippa and that's a good sort of confusion, something very similar to the feeling when I first read Neuromancer when I was thirteen. Go figure.

Inside, the trailer was the color of Vaseline, LEDs buried in it, bedded in Walmart amber.

This video comes from IO9 and if you want more, hop on to the NYPL event page where you have an hour-long video of the whole event (with downloadable audio, video and transcript links) that's going to give you some great insight on Gibson's life and also some teasers on The Peripheral - two timelines shifting in the book, one being cca thirty years from now, the other terribly far ahead, consequently very hard to write? As I said, watch the whole thing.

TEASER: Machete Girl issue 8

I'm watching people fuck other people looking like cars in a shabby little hut somewhere in the Philippines. Bears eating salmon, and occasionally, each other, near the Brooks river, Alaska. The surface of Mars that looks just like Tatooine, and in a few years, a landscape most possibly LEGO'd out of Starbucks and Wal-Mart, hot items of the American terraforming industry.

Hey. Long-distance runner cyberpunk magazine Machete Girl is right before releasing its issue no. 8. focusing on the concept of cyber mages and I just happened to write the lead feature in it. Thankfully you will have a great number of other articles carving out bad veve out of your head (on Total Recall, Continuum or Dark Angel, just to name a few) and it's also the very first issue with a male model. Until you're waiting for the free PDF download of this issue, head over to their site and also check out previous episodes of Machete Girl TV! ROCK!

I leave you with one more thing to ponder on. There is a well-known and much acknowledged ceremonial magick practice known as the Achieving the Knowledge and Conversation of The Holy Guardian Angel. Which is strange, because I've just checked my Google History and just spent 200 bucks on a psychological profile and a statistic forecast for the upcoming six months based on my OpenGraph.

So I'm pretty much done conversing.

BLADERUNNERESQUE BIOPUNK SHORT: Loom [4K, RED]

Luke Scott in cooperation with RED Camera presents "LOOM". A film shot completely in 4K format in the tone and style of Ridley Scott's dystopian Blade Runner. The film was originally intended to help showcase the prototype REDray 3D laser player. The film was constructed for 3D, the film needed to push the limits of the cameras exposure sensitivity and colour range and 4K projection. Visually the film is unmatched to date in it's use of RED's new technology.

sufferrosa: in future poland, aging is illegal, this is the way of life

Aging is illegal and death is forbidden in Sufferrosa, Poland’s latest addition to an already crazed and colourful repertoire of the neon weird. Sufferrosa is a great piece of experimental Godardian storytelling by new media director Dawid Marcinkowski and his crew. Take neo noir, medical Noh punk, cut and paste surgery beautification, a shameless use of audiovisual montage (aided by giants like Sonic Youth or The KLF), mix it, break it and from its splinters reconstruct a bizarre non-linear story about two omnipotent motifs of today’s underlying urban psyche: fear of death and the cult of beauty. (sufferrosa.com, THE DOSE mag)

Never thought new media could be this fun and immersive, although it's more like future Miranda Island than future Poland, but anyway. The rest of the review is in the Paris issue of The Dose mag that I'm chiefeditoring and you should buy it, not only because you can read how I write gonzo in English but also because it has 79 pages of goodness on other stuff. But back to the Sufferrosa site - the loop you gonna hear on the site comes from the Law of Life 12" released by Italian synthpop project FARAH. They are amazing and captivating and you should check their MySpace - they sound like an enervated, post-menses Chicks on Speed in a hospital after an almost fatal car crash. (This actually was a compliment.) So log in onto the neo noir cinema - bet it's gonna take you an hour or two to get out of it. And you'll want to go back, because it's touchingly eerie and it will make you cringe and think about the second generation cyberpunk stuff Neal Stephenson and Bruce Sterling wrote.

planetdamage.com: hard labour with the lovely paris

Hello. I am Damage, gonzo journalist, catalyst and an explorer of weird and futurologistic. A month ago I knew how to time travel. Now, only a few hours ago, to my best knowledge, I woke up while being abducted by space aliens and remarkably under the drills. It gives me great satisfaction, erection and self-confidence to conclude that ambassadors of superior civilizations warp time and space just to drill me. And I also think this was also the equivalent of a galactic job interview. Because we finished the new issue of The Dose magazine. About Paris. And you will buy this magazine. Because all the money I will hoard up from sales will go into new pancreas and a one-way ticket to Singapore. But more about this after the embed and the jump.

THE DOSE magazine - Issue 3 (Paris) TEASER

The Dose. For those who're late for class, it started as a free PDF mag targeting one city per issue to showcase its weird underdog talents: musicians, artists, designers with a focus on music, more music and great eyecandy. I had friends helping me out but it was mostly a solo project and it was a great thing to do, doing a pilot on Budapest and then two more issues, on Tokyo and London. Then three years passed. And we decided to go back to the original plan we liked, I quit being a full-time IT journalist and after long months of working in our free time, here's the Paris issue. If you were following up on what I did, I promised so many times that this will come that you probably didn't believe me. But it's here now.

Yes. The Paris issue. It has features on French steampunk, cyberpunk, netlabels (amazing stuff ranging from mad orgy freejazz to pumping warehouse techno), parkour, psytrance (a great comparison of chocolate and goa!) and fashion. And a great piece of infographics about French bands we loved. Features on LVA, brain hacking and Chinese underground music. Interviews with Clélia Altaïr, Punish Yourself, Lukas Zpira, Die Puppe, Foretaste, Miss Kittin, Scan X, the guys at Dejobaan Games and RJDJ, Nohno / Kibuka, Blue Stahli, Shiv-R and Black Nail Cabaret. And e-readers. And our recommendations for 2010. And lots of reviews.

So spread the news, enjoy the show, buy our mag, support the artists, don't steal this mag if you don't exactly need to, send us feedback and contact us if you think you could help us rock more. And here are a few music videos from these previous artists you gonna love!

aeon flux episodes: the indie aeon flux platformer game

Aeon Flux Episodes (...) is a shoot-em-up with a bit of parkour action thrown in. (...) If you've ever play games like Flashback or Abe's Odyssey then you may already have a feel for it. Every animation in the game plays at 24 frames per second. No exceptions. (...) It also features the ability to shoot left and/or right independently. This means you can shoot the enemies behind you as you walk forward, or better yet you can shoot the enemies in front and behind simultaneously. (via indiedb.com)

child of eden (the damage report 006 előzetes)

2k10, hatodik szegmens. (Olvasható a Mondo magazin júliusi számában, a blogban augusztustól.)

FOR ALL MY ENGLISH READERS: Yes, Rez has now a sequel. Child of Eden is affiliated with Ubisoft, Q Entertainment, Tetsuya Mizuguchi and his pop project Genki Rockets. We will buy a PS3 only for this if it doesn't get released on the Xbox 360.

second trailer for new cyberpunk anime exaella released

Andrew Oudot, mastermind behind a new and relatively obscure SF/cyberpunk anime Exaella has just released a second trailer for his project, revealing more black and green and film grain, a mysterious girl, someone with a weird helmet that apparently came straight from Hellgate:London and HUDs with lots of kanjis thrown in to make sure we are in the future and humanity will suddenly ditch English as a universal intermediary language to switch to Japanese. Which I personally wouldn't mind but anyway. I'm sure the trailer will end up on YouTube, but for the time being you can watch it @ andrewoudot.com and if you need more (but hilariously scarce) info on the project, check out a previous infopost on PlanetDamage.

Többet a quietearth.us cikkéből, katt.

cyberpunkers - i needed to go (in fact, you shouldn't have been born to begin with)

The “Cyberpunkers” project is the child, born in 2006, of the passion for Cyberpunk culture of two young Italian DJ’s. The format aims at giving a fresh start to this style through four different yet connected forms of art: electronic music, fashion, design and photography. In a nutshell, a transposition of the Cyberpunk world in modern clubbing Through several performances at famous clubs, “Cyberpunkers” drew lots of interest and ended up being much taked about for both their original look, made of masks behind which their true identity is hidden, and for the originality of their shows, which are marked out by the use of two consoles at once and powered by several audio machines. (via myspace, taking Italian grandeur with a pinch of salt. You partyheads gonna love the almost French house sound, though. Sponsored by Adidas and Microsoft? Am I really seeing this?)

UPDATE 1: I remember Bruce Sterling said once how cyberpunkness (whatever it is) became a whore of a slang expression when people started talking about cyberpunk trousers and whatever that makes your corneas bleed. This is sweaty balls, wastedness and fucking in toilets. And bad shoes.

penfield's electrode 1.2: japanese girls and street punks with implants

Brainmove, creative mind behind the YouTube-based Japanese cyberpunk series Penfield's Electrode mailed me the link to the new episode numbered 1.2. He's currently experimenting with it quite a lot and it shows: the visuals changed and that's the first episode where characters actually talk a lot. It might be my ears after two hours of brainwave synchronization but not everything is crystal clear in the production, still, it's quite refreshing after the first two episodes and I'm really curious about where he takes this next time - truth is, this being a one-man project, I really appreciate all the time and effort he puts into this. Check out the first and the second episode here and also the post with a few extra details on the project.

To cut a long story short: if you've been expecting Purefold, the Blade Runner webisode series, time to open a sixpack and pull up the black flag, they didn't get enough funding. (Check our previous post on Purefold here with a single (btw quite jovial) comment about Ridley's vision being three decades stale.) If you crave the Blade Runner universe, click on More and see what we've got for you. Yep, the full Total Recall 2070 series online. And apparently that's a completely legal stream to spend hours with.

retina: how you changed your eyes back in 2003 (cyberpunk from vienna)

we explore the aesthetic archetypes of cyberpunk with the backdrop of a large, sprawling metropolis, neon & smoke and the reconfiguration of the human body through machines

Nothing extremely special, but most of the archetypes are laid and presented nicely. Violet Suk and Martin Koch, if you check out their previous reels on Vimeo, turn out to be great talent magnets: they did a few music videos for Fetish 69, Fuckhead and Bunny Lake, worked multiple times with the Sci Fi channel and did a few very short movies as well, one of them being Retina, as presented on JazJaz. Another quite cyberpunkish work of theirs is Simulacra, embedded below.

william gibson's new book "zero history" arrives in september

ZERO HISTORY, William Gibson's tenth novel arrives on the 7th of September, as advertised in the Putnam Fall 2010 catalogue. As a matter of fact, happy 62th birthday. (via zerohistory blog)

Whatever you do, because you are an artist, will bring you to the next thing of your own. . . .

When she sang for The Curfew, Hollis Henry's face was known worldwide. She still runs into people who remember the poster. Unfortunately, in the post-crash economy, cult memorabilia doesn't pay the rent, and right now she's a journalist in need of a job. The last person she wants to work for is Hubertus Bigend, twisted genius of global marketing; but there's no way to tell an entity like Bigend that you want nothing more to do with him. That simply brings you more firmly to his attention.

Milgrim is clean, drug-free for the frst time in a decade. It took eight months in a clinic in Basel. Fifteen complete changes of his blood. Bigend paid for all that. Milgrim's idiomatic Russian is superb, and he notices things. Meanwhile no one notices Milgrim. That makes him worth every penny, though it cost Bigend more than his cartel-grade custom-armored truck.

The culture of the military has trickled down to the street--Bigend knows that, and he'll fnd a way to take a cut. What surprises him though is that someone else seems to be on top of that situation in a way that Bigend associates only with himself. Bigend loves staring into the abyss of the global market; he's just not used to it staring back.

deus ex 3 trailer (deus ex: human revolution)

The game takes place during the year 2027, 25 years before Deus Ex. Nanotechnological augmentations have yet to be developed and biomechanical augmentations are the current state of the art. The main character, Adam Jensen, is a private security officer with a company that specializes in these augmentations. He witnesses a chilling attack on his company, and "the conspiracy begins. (...) Five metropolises are included and Detroit, Shanghai and Montreal have been confirmed. In addition, the protagonist will have his own apartment where he may store his secrets and collected information. (...) The trailer ends with "More to come at E3 2010", which indicates that the game will be shown at E3 2010.

renegade soundwave meets blade runner (sez alec empire)

There is only one better thing in the classic urban landscape scene of Blade Runner with the geisha ads and the furnaces synced to the gorgeous space ambient of Vangelis: the very same thing synced to Blast'em Out by Renegade Soundwave. Alec Empire always recommends wicked stuff.

2009, missing post #16: fight evil with evil, the comics

Visualize a world without peace or justice. Visualize the business plot (1938) overthrowing FDR and installing a capito-fascist cabinet. Visualize the corporate wars (2050-2080) wiping the USA off the map with its own military-industrial complex. Visualize Entropica, a plot to murder God by three monotheist religions. Visualize two brothers, born from a medical cybernetic experiment on the effects of torture and human suffering. Visualize Man-Machine, destined to unleash a blind fury on the world. Visualize his brother, I-7the fourth prophet, spreadin a gospel of war among the machine-intelligence. THE MAN-MACHINE EPIC tells the story of their conflict... (via fightevilwithevil)

Not forgetting you either, rrooyyccee. Read his online cyberpunk comics at fightevilwithevil.com and enhance it with the related blog as well. It is actually quite good, lost in a triangle somewhere between Nawlz, moody French comics and Blame!.

2009, missing post #10: the matrix still lives in denmark

Do not think you're nothing. Quite a feat for Google Translate, innit? That's the title for Manyar I. Parwani's short film set in the Matrix universe - basically a re-enactment of the scene where Neo meets Morpheus for the first time. Without any working knowledge of Dansk, I can only compliment at the visual quality and the cuts and at that point I'm surely sinking. Good thing is, Parwani's already been working on a new project, Klar Til Optagelse (Ready to Record) - the casting was previously public and it was obviously Quiet Earth who broke the news to the world - about Denmark's biggest public casting endeavour yet. Below is the brief talk about what Parwani felt obligatory to say about the whole process.
