Look where sifting through endless linkboxes stored in 2009 will get you. British cyberpunk movie Hardware done almost twenty years ago (read CPR's review about it here) features none other than Carl McCoy, frontman and lead singer for one of the best bands that the Goth subculture ever donated to the world - Fields of the Nephilim. McCoy's voice is slightly altered but his eyes and the hat he wears give him away instantly - playing a zonetripper character who's out there in the wasteland, scavening whatever's left for the taking. The movie is hilariously bad but hey, it was the golden nineties, everything was permitted. Below, one of their best tracks, For Her Light off the 1990 album Elizium.

Darren Lynn Bousman's REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA last year was a sine wave, high with its much-promising cast (from Skinny Puppy's Nivek Ogre to Alexa Vega, Sarah Brightman or even Paris Hilton), its fusion approach and the visuals, low with coherence and the lack of, well, anything to compel opera newbies to give themselves easily to its entirety. Whatever we missed - the cheesy, gory fun -, Miguel Sapochnik will put it back in his Repo Men remake - debuting on the 2nd of April, 2010 - featuring Jude Law, Forest Whitaker and even Master RZA himself!

Pachinko operator Daiichi Shokai is really desperate inventive about enolagaying the pachinko market with their new machine Pachinko Matrix. The past week apparently was all about pachinko on Japanese pop culture sites and although bloggers agree that it's actor Nukumizu Youichi [温水洋一] in both of the ads, opinions vary whether it's really Carrie-Anne Moss before her pregnancy or just a lookalike (we'd go for the lookalike but Western actors actually do shoulder the occasional Japanese commercials for the paychecks). Sculpting noodle bonsai in bullettime is actually one of the best ideas I found in commercials (though it's really been a long time since I watched them at creative agencies and even that didn't take me anywhere), so spare a minute of your precious pre-Christmas time. Disney got legendary right in 1982 with TRON, whatever cyberpunk ripoff vision of the Far East future they wanted to depict with Surrogates, they failed tremendously and we could have gotten the fair point of growing your own vegetables in the back garden far easier. (See Gamer, they could get the present right. With Dexter, even. But I'm dragging myself into the 2009 retrospective article you'll get in a few days. So, hush.) Case found himself staring through a shop window. The place sold small bright objects to the sailors. Watches, flicknives, lighters, pocket VTRs, simstim decks, weighted manriki chains, and shuriken. The shuriken had always fascinated him, steel stars with knife-sharp points. Some were chromed, others black, others treated with a rainbow surface like oil on water. But the chrome stars held his gaze. They were mounted against scarlet ultrasuede with nearly invisible loops of nylon fishline, their centers stamped with dragons or yinyang symbols. Nem csoda, hogy az ébrentartó érdeklődés egyik fókuszpontja Magyarország, tizenöt évvel ezelőtt a Nyugati pályaudvar metróállomása meg a jelenlegi West End között húzódó, árusokkal penészpettyezett betonfolyosója volt a Gibson-aluljáró, ezt magyarázták nekem, nézzek csak szét a harmincforintos, kétfaszú fodrászokkal (keresztbe könnyebb bekapni, mint hosszában) és a cicanadrághoz passzoló göndörfrizúrokkal telepakolt, lopott jpegekből összerakott fekete-fehér pornómagazinokon meg a taktkazettákon, amik kétszáz forintért már annyira voltak illegálisak, hogy könnyebb volt szemet hunyni felettük, mint bezúzatni őket. Aztán elromlott a zeneipar és dokumentáltan roppantottak meg a sajtó száját pont bezáró mennyiséget vagy Ukrajnának támadt nagyobb szüksége volt a popszakmára. A balkánkelet szomorúnemecsekje azóta hálásan köpi az epigont, amikor van mit neki, azok meg pár kör után eltűnnek a lefolyó mélyén, hiába tanultátok azt a CSIból, hogy addig kell rángatni a vécélehúzót, amíg vissza nem hozza az örvényfizika a gyilkos vérével festett tampont, az kurvára nem igaz. Jóindulattal szólva nem, de amúgy hangrólhangra jelenség volt a Bonanza Banzai meg az Escalator is, akiknek legjobb számát (Anatomia, live in Dessau) is csak azért rakom be, mert egy az egyben Front 242 a Front 242-t idézi, a szöveget viszont nem lehet érteni, így nem is szembesülünk az olyan ellenkulturális bravúrokkal, mint a pupilla-reflex negatív, az exitus beállt / a műtőasztalon a lélek a testemtől elszállt. tetsuo the bullet man: tsukamoto's english-speaking sequel
That's a good day to be an IO9 reader now. According to them, Shinya Tsukamoto revealed his newest project at the Comic Con: Tetsuo the Bullet Man will be his new sequel to one of the most authentic cyberpunk monogatari so far. The English-speaking movie (to be released in 2010) is about Anthony, a guy working in Tokyo who transforms into Tetsuo after his son is called after the encounter of the "evil driver", a character who's basically creating Tetsuos in the first two movies. comic con: tr2n renamed to tron legacy
IO9 reports from Comic Con: apparently the sequel to the first Disney cyberpunk TRON is no longer called TR2N but Tron Legacy and apart from the brief lightcycle run we've seen in the first trailer, we find out that Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is living inside glowing vectorland and after 20 years his son gets a hunch and goes out to find him. (via io9) This is supplemented by a new site called Flynn Lives that apparently serves as a perfect basis for future augmented reality games. According to IMDB, Tron 2.0 - as they call it - is scheduled for the big screen in 2011.
penfield's electrode: japanese girls and brain hacks for hire
Canadian neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield was something we'd have called a radio shack afficionado back in the days, only he did it to brains. If you ever wondered who found out the 0day vulnerability on the brain not feeling any pain directly, Penfield was surely one neurogeek to exploit that. According to what Michael Talbot wrote in The Holographic Universe,
While operating on the brains of epileptics, he would electrically stimulate various areas of their brain cells. To his amazement he found that when he stimulated the temporal lobes (the region of the brain behind the temples) of one of his fully conscious patients, they reexperienced memories of past episodes from their lives in vivid detail. One man suddenly relived a conversation he had had with friends in South Africa; a boy heard his mother talking on the telephone and after several touches from Penfield's electrode was able to repeat her entire conversation; a woman found herself in her kitchen and could hear her son playing outside.
This will serve as a gorgeous intro to YouTube user brainmove's "Repressed adolescent web-series in da house... ", PENFIELD'S ELECTRODE. Smooth Japanese narrative with low angle shots, heavy dose of after-effects and some shots of a mutating mental patient that reminds me of Metalosis Maligna. Tune in when we manage to find out more about this small jewel!
tron reboot episode 2: 40 seconds of the neon-edged absurd
Ben Hansford's Tron comedy series is back with another 40 seconds. Top-notch visuals are seriously degraded by the lack of storyline and the comedy aspect of it all. Sad, sad.

A valós élet és az elképzelhetetlenül szilárd animehajú, éjszakai multiplayer meccsekben brillírozott reflexű, ötezer dolláros baszadékhangú narrátorokkal figyelmesre élhajtott játékok közös halmaza a headshot: viszlát a fánkszagú ing mögé szíjazott kevlárnak meg a szív fölé rejtett, háborút megjárt, dohányszagú nagyapától örökölt cigarettásdoboznak, ha fejbelőnek, százharmincöt fokban megcsúszik a világ, lekapcsolják a villanyt, albumborító marad a vérfoltból utánad az aszfalton.
Ilyen headshotot sikerült bekapnom egy klasszikus gyerekverstől, hogyaztmondja Oravecz Imre majdnemhaikuja (7-8-9), gyűjtöttem a bélyeget, apa hozott három kilót, azóta nem gyűjtök bélyeget, most meg nézz fel a Google Trends grafikonra és értelmezd a lényeget, ez történt a cyberpunkkal is, neonegestül-esőbenhackerestül, ahogy kell. Most huszonöt éves a Neurománc, a sci-fi portálok egymás után robbantják a cikkeket, hogy naprakész-e még a múlt évszázad legjelentősebb víziója és ha körbenézel, naprakész annyiból, hogy jelen lett belőle. A Trends hevült szemű szomorúnosztalgia helyett bemondja a frankót: három éve stagnál a cyberpunk, gyakorlatilag döglött, bármi is legyen az, az ébrentartó érdeklődés egyik fókuszpontja pedig Magyarország, elvégre is mi pipáltuk ki a világ jó dolgait hologramoktól a telefonközponton és a tévén keresztül a művérig, üljön le, elégtelen.

Óvatosan meglépett, cukormázas addendumnak ígérkezik a japán cyberpunk halódó lajstromában Masamune Shirow új, egyébként tavalyi, kevesek által ismert animéje, a Real Drive (RD 潜脳調査室 RD Sennō Chōsashitsu). ghost in the shell stand alone complex new series a possibility
During the question and answer session, one fan asked about the possibility of a third season of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Terashima-Furuta answered that she expects the project to happen, but that the director is currently tied up in other projects.
Expects to happen would mean four to seven years on the Western hemisphere, two to three on the Eastern. (anime news network on the production i.g. press conference via drifter)

Árnyvilág. Spook Country. Árnyilág. Összehúzott szemekkel nézni a könyveket egymás mellett, visszaemlékezni az esti beszélgetésekre Ajkay Armitage Örkénnyel, aki végtelen mennyiségű tippet dobott fel, mielőtt maradt volna ennél a címnél, én meg annál a meggyőződésnél, hogy vagy angolból vagyok túl jó, vagy magyarból vagyok túl gyenge, de az egyik legalább. A lényeg, magyarul is kapható az új Gibson, amit elolvasok, mert Örkény jól fordít, bármennyire is mondja a posztmodernben fuldokló Bán Zsófia, hogy pontatlan és amatőr (két percet túlélést tippelek neki egy középkategóriás Sprawlban, aztán már vagy jó tizenöt csecse szervtankban folytatná az utat Mianmar és Bukarest felé), a Galaktika szerkesztőség tagjai közül pedig aki amellett kardoskodik, hogy a cyberpunkot kiberpunknak kell fordítani (lásd 2008 február, Bruce "A cyberpunk Milli Vanillije vagyok" Bethke Cyberpunk című novellája sem úszta meg), azt rozsdás faszlánc szögezze pontonhídra.

A cyberpunkot úgyis szereted, dolgozd át a forgatókönyvet úgy, hogy üljön, mondja Mesmer Tomi rendező, kell bele természetfeletti elem is. Én mindenestül kihoudiniznék bármit, ami nem szilikon, vagy államadósságnyi méretű robbanás, aztán mégis máshogy alakul a történet: 2009 februárjában két napig egy csepeli gyárban, Budapest szélén forgatjuk le a valamikoratávolijövőben rövidfilmet klasszikus elemekből: elhagyatott gyártelepre menekül egy katonai vírust lopott dezertőr, az utána küldött katona pedig nem azzal szembesül, mint amire számított. A film soundtrackjét a magyar First Aid 4 Souls és a japán, cyberpunk körökben jól ismert ipari csapat, a BAAL követte el, a film konceptmunkáit a H.R. Gigerhez gyakran hasonlított Joachim Luetkének köszönhetjük, a továbbiakban Twitter-beszámolók és helyszíni fotók mellett jön a film is, teljesen tizenhatpercestül.
14sec was born in the Pakistani district of Marble Arch on a bed reeking of curry with a hacked up telly showing what looked like a documentary of stab-happy London girlie gangs, in a Viet restaurant somewhere in Chinatown with some real decent frog dish to devour and some weeks (and half a continent) later, in our face place Sunny Corner, windows tainted with blue and dark pink. I know you love cyberpunk, rework the script and make it really happen, says director Tomi Mesmer, but we'll need some supernatural to add there as well. I would honestly Houdini everything out except for silicone or explosions eating up yearly GDPs, then it all goes in a slightly different way. In February 2009 we're stranded for two days on the outskirts of Budapest, shielded by a factory rented for two days, working on classic clichés: soldier steals military virus, runs for an abandoned factory, zaibatsu sends a gun for hire after him and then things don't exactly go according to plan. Soundtrack was done by up-and-coming Hungarian electro project First Aid 4 Souls and Japanese cyberpunk massif BAAL, concept art is by none other than Joachim Luetke - and you're just about to see the movier with some past tweets, behind-the-scenes photos and the sixteen-minutes long movie itself.

the chosen/virtual diva: blue and smoky cyberpunk reggaetón
IO9 had a compilation a few days ago entitled The Best And Worst Of Virtual Music Video Worlds, ranging from classic eighties filledvector Dire Straits to lightcycle ripoff Infernal. Here's an addition I managed to dig up on Slate - Puerto Rican reggaetón superstar Don Omar's music video The Chosen/Virtual Diva, according to the post, " features lots of icy-blue light, plumes of smoke, guys in lab coats, jackbooted women in leather, and Omar alternately strapped to a gurney and bellowing through a bullhorn." In fact, just what the doctor ordered. (In fact, if Don Omar's world is a virtual one, I'm being very poetic about it.)
matthew santoro scifi "offline" inspired by tool
There is nothing new under the sun and both the voudoun gods of the interwebs and Warren Ellis work hard to decrease your novelty and shock tolerance levels. But sometimes there's just something to keep you entertained. @vjesci just sent this over and it was both the morning coffee and the trailer for Matthew Santoro's movie Offline that scratched my brain and made me feel and look like interested.
According to the post on Fourtheye, Tool guitarist Adam Jones was a huge source of inspiration for the movie.
He basically said to look at every shot like a piece of art. If your going to put your name on something make sure its something YOU are happy with (emphasis on YOU) because if you truly consider it to be a piece of art then in a way it is a reflection of yourself.

purefold: webseries in the blade runner universe
IO9 breaks news on Purefold, a new webseries set in the Blade Runner universe. The project is backed up by the Scott family (Ridley Scott, being the original movie's director, his brother Tony and his son Luke), RSA Films (Scott's commercials company) and independent studio Ag8. The series will take place before the original movie's 2019 setting - the first episodes are most likely to take place in 2011. The five to ten minute shorts will actually be driven by reader input pulled in from FriendFeed - according to IO9, there might actually be some hope for Purefold to make its way to TV (or DVD). As the producers don't own the rights to the PKD novel BR is based upon (Do Androids Dream of Electroic Sheep?), you won't see any BR-specific characters or situations in the series.
Two very interesting things to note about Purefold. 1) RSA is reaching back to how the original movies used billboard ads in the cityscapes and now they're busy hooking up themselves with ad and marketing agencies. 2) Scott announced that the series will be released under Creative Commons, so basically you can remix and recut the episodes to your liking. According to IO9, Ridley Scott is the first major Hollywood director to embrace CC. (via io9)
