rez (és mi történt még 2001-ben?)
Vannak az életedben olyan pillanatok, amikor a világ, freeze frame, megszűnik mozogni, te pedig fényes, remegő szélű Polaroid-képen nézed, mi robbant be az életedbe éppen, a gondolatok hosszú szálon nyúlnak előre, a hangokat gondosan letekerték, a gondviselő Photoshopja pedig szemnyugtató pasztellbe kevert mindent, elemezhetsz nyugodtan. Ez volt 2001. Az alternatív univerzumok kutatóinak ezzel az évvel a legkönnyebb a dolguk: kilenc és fél perces az a YouTube-ra posztolt videó, amely a 2001: Űrodüsszeia dimenzióváltását ábrázolja, rávágva az előző évszázad egyik legfelszabadítóbb számával, az Orbital Halcyonjával (a Hackers főcímzenéje ez, tökéletes lenne, ha a világ bármely nagyvárosában landolva ez lüktetne a repülőgépek fejhallgatóiból, délutáni meleg napfényben), ez is lett az, ami nem valósult meg,. A mesterséges tudathoz legközelebb a 2000-es évváltás soha meg nem érkezett dátumváltási hisztériája, a Y2K probléma állt, az sem söpörte le a bankárokat és a kormányokat a Mercator-vetületről, a Holdon meg csak százmillió tonnányi jeget találtak a sarkköri területeken, dimenziókaput, monolitot meg idegen civilizációt, na azt lófasznyit se.
Eredményes év volt ez pedig: Amerika laborjaiban kikotyvasztották CC macskát, az első igazi klónállatot (két hosszú hónapig várták, hogy kimúljon, nem múlt ki, csak utána írta meg a Nature a nagy hírt), az operációs rendszerek csatája új fordulatszámra váltott, megjelent a Windows XP és az OS X, a Google bekebelezte a Usenetet, a fórumok és warez boardok máig is biztosan és zavartalan futó ősét, aki pedig beindította a 9¬/11-es félelemgépezetet, leplezetlen dollármilliárdokat zsebelhetett be a védelmi, a külpolitikai és a pániklobbiktól. Japán kétszer is vesénlépte az európai popkultúrát, egyszer Fritz Lang örökbecsű osztályharc-fantasztikumát, a Metropolist írta újra gőzízű, tócsaszemű animébe, aztán Varsót, virtuális valóságot, családi idillként főzött kelkáposztalevest és Artúr király legendáját keverte össze a több év múlva felfutó MMO-őrülettel, így született meg az Avalon, Mamoru Oshii Balkán-ízű vetülete a Ghost in the Shell után. A nagy büdzséktől nem, de a jó ötletektől annál inkább szagló független játékipar (pontosabban a brit Introversion) megszüli az Uplinket, ezzel biztosítván a hackerjátékok lassan gyarapodó, de végeláthatatlanul terjengő utánpótlását, a magyar irodalmi folyóirat, a Prae pedig megjelenteti cyberpunk különszámát, amiben olyan címekkel kápráztatja el a hevült szemüvegű olvasókat, mint „Adatmezők közt: allegória, retorika és a paratér” vagy „A cyberpunk metaforái: ontológia, episztemológia és science fiction”, igaz, akik ezeket olvassák, egy rozsdás katonai bögrénél bonyolultabb tárgyba is lételméletet, grandnarratívát és önkifejezési piramist szőnek.

johnny mnemonic: the deleted scenes
Unnecessary to order the Japanese DVD now. There are quite a few differences between the American version of Johnny Mnemonic that we all came to love and the Japanese one, considered to be the more obscure version - Wikipedia lists all of them. It's just been early this week I found the outtakes from the JM DVD.
neuromancer rescheduled, liv tyler in talks
Early this week, Production Weekly tweeted about Liv Tyler being in talks to star in the Neuromancer movie, the Joseph Kahn adaptation cyberpunk afficionados have criticized so openly for enrolling Hayden Christensen as Case. The movie's IMDB page lists noone at the moment - but if you've been following up on the news every now and then, you'll be delighted to notice that the 2009 screening date has been postponed until 2011. Although there's been no extra info added about Liv Tyler, the general consensus is that she's going to play Molly - even though the role of 3Jane could be more fitting.
This video above is a mock-up of the intro credits of Neuromancer and it's just how we would have wanted to see it up until the mid-nineties, I guess. The cast list is worth a peep: although it still lists Hayden Christensen as Case and makes no mention of Liv Tyler (obviously, the video's been uploaded to YouTube on the 30th of January), the names are self-explanatory and if you check the video comments, users came up with the same conclusions: Olga Kurylenko as Molly, Paul Bettany as Riviera, David Morse as Armitage, Peter Stormare as The Finn, Steve Buscemi as Dixie Flatline, Djimon Honsou as Maelcum, Christina Ricci as 3Jane, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hideo, Ian Holm as Ashpool - and, not surprisingly, Christopher Walken as Neuromancer (or as some believe, Wintermute).
gamer: fusion sci-fi foursome
The indie SF/horror movie cornerstone Twitch had this coming a long time ago under the working title Game. With a sudden twist of a rename, Gamer features Gerard Butler, Ludacris, the creative guys behind Crank and a script that actually brings lots of previous cyberpunk(ish) gems to mind:
Game (sic!) is a near-future action/thriller starring Gerard Butler (Kable) as the champion of an on-line game called "Slayers". Mind-control technology has taken society by storm and "Slayers" allows humans control other humans in mass-scale, multiplayer online game. With his every move tracked by millions, Kable's ultimate challenge becomes regaining his identity and launching an attack on the system that has imprisoned him.
This is basically Running Man (and a little bit of MadWorld, all the broadcast show elements), Avalon (the all-encompassing multiplayer game), Death Race (with the inmates and the hope of freedom). And eXistenZ. And basically all cyberpunk movies about TV shows and virtual reality and MMOs. Cyberpunk for us, squirting ladies for Butler. (via kotaku)

fetish, industrial and cyberpunk tweeters
MySpace without cleavages, Facebook without apps, last.fm without networking. This is how you'd look at Twitter if you'd live in a tunnel with acute hard-on syndrome for eyecandy, ADHD and honest love for click frenzy. That's alright, some of us still do. We'd take a different approach, though, and follow the footsteps of Violet Blue who made a wonderful job drawing up a master list of sex tweeters - we'd do the same for industrial, gothic, fetish, steampunk and cyberpunk, perhaps alternative. Headscan has always been a definitve milestone in intelligent dance electro, industrial techno, cyberpunk, call it what you will, in a pantheon of names like Haujobb, Clock DVA or Forma Tadre. Cool, blue and sombre across the soundscape of the real, they slapped Gibson and Sterling into the mix of hyperclear electronics under the TV skies of Canada. Taking a break, they shared their opinions on cyberpunk, bizarro, techno-fetishism, Dune and many more.

Kenji Siratori: acclaimed Japanese cyberpunk artist, bizarro idol, brain sex toy for linguists and rebels alike. vernor vinge on singularity, moore's law and cyberspace "turned inside out"
True Names and Rainbow's End author and mathematician Vernor Vinge talks about localizers, the Singularity and how cyberspace suddenly turned inside out. The youtube embed belongs to Ideas Project, a NOKIA-funded site where thought leaders share their ideas on the future and the present around is: apart from Vinge you also have Chris Anderson of Wired, Earl Hewitt of MIT and also Esther Dyson - at least these names should ring a bell. transhumanist post-cyberpunk magazine H+ releases 2009 spring issue
We knew life's going to get twisted when R.U. Sirius re-entered the atmosphere. Ken "R.U. Sirius" Goffman, editor for iconic cyberculture magazine Mondo 2000, mastermind for 10 Zen Monkeys, columnist for Wired and the author of several hundred articles on subcultural issues (and author of The Real Cyberpunk Fakebook) released the first issue for his science/cyberpunk/transhumanist PDF magazine H+ in October, giving us a glimpse into the future of bodyhack.

ghost in the shell 2.0: dvd has now entered the building
Ladies and gents, I now have the Ghost in the Shell 2.0 Japanese edition DVD in my paws, expect the review during the first week of January. The net is vast and infinite... not.
pileus, the internet umbrella
Pileus ("the internet umbrella!") is a joint project by Takashi Matsumoto and Sho Hashimoto - it's basically an amped up umbrella with access to Google Earth and Flickr (also having a screen surface, a built-in camera, a GPS, a motion sensor and a digital compass). You see a bird's eye view on your surroundings in the inside of the Pileus, GPS and the digital compass keeps the overhead display updated, whereas you can take images with the built-in camera and upload them to your Flickr account with context tags. Mix this with the glowing Blade Runner umbrella and I'm so game. (project site, via cpc)
mizuguchi talks rez
In Japan, we had 200,000 copies, including the special package with the Trance Vibrator. I think that in the United States, it was very small. So small. I don't know why, but I think it was too challenging at that time, for the United States market. Recently, we had a big success with Lumines on PSP in the U.S., but before that, many people said to me, there's no market for puzzle games. So it's changing. Now, with Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and new types of music games, I think it's a very good timing. (via)

And if you don't have Rez, my goodness, what you're missing! The masterwork of maverick designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Rez is to shooters what Mizuguchi's later Lumines is to falling-block puzzles. Everything flows to the beat of the game's awesome techno soundtrack; you lock on to enemies then let go of the button to let your fire fly, they explode to the beat of the music. As you progress through the levels, the music goes from a simple back beat and a few rhythmic beeps to a dramatic multi-layered piece, and the vector-line graphics get more and more intricate as well. bloodnet vs bernes> all to zero
My sources tell me Jasper Bernes is now a minor household name in cyberpunk poetry. He also runs a blog on bs. Burt says that it's the poetry the world of Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash would include if that world could include really good poetry (and I'm not sure it could). Snow Crash does include poetry, although it's more like the updated twentieth-century version called lyrics. My best bet for cybepunk poetry still lurks in the depths of the previous-millennium era, in a PC game called Bloodnet - that would still be a treat for moviemakers or even series producers, for that matter, easily taking the best bits of Strange Days, Hellgate:London (it's more like templars fighting vampires in lower Manhattan) and lots of street-gang bravado. The link for Bloodnet is here, quite unconveniently killed by an ESA notice. Lucky I bought it in a miserable RPG shop for something like four bucks. (Update: that was a hilariously bad way of finishing up this post. I am frustrated.)

Új játékon dolgozik az eddig kivétel nélkül cyberpunk játékokat (Uplink, Darwinia, Defcon) gyártó angol Introversion. A céges blogba most kerültek fel a városgenerátorról a legújabb képek, jól láthatóan procedurális városgenerálásról van szó, Chris pedig többször is közölte a blogokban (1, 2, 3, 4), hogy akármit is gondolunk a játékról, nem az lesz belőle, ami - és egyébként sem döntötték el, hogy milyen zsáner lesz belőle, csak kódolnak a vakvilágba. (A legelső postban még épületbelső-generálást lehetett a képeken látni.) Szerintünk Katamari-klón lesz belőle. Vagy grafikus hentai-novella.
THE GENE GENERATION: Far away, so close.
Már csak hármat kell aludni (ez az okkult mintákba kuporgatott ginzengtabletták, Go Fast!ek és kávébögrék nélkül két hetet tesz) és 白靈 szilikonmellei végre betöltik a falra gyorsszegecselt tartalékképernyőt. Az elmúlt egy év kisebb-nagyobb cyberpunk sikerei (Renaissance, Karas, Ergo Proxy) után csak őszintén remélhetem, hogy a THE GENE GENERATION gyorsan eléri a kultfilm-státuszt, van rá alapja.
A rendező Pearry Reginald Teo ugyanis (xangájából leszűrve) hithű módon követi a meszkalinon edzett hiperaktív tinédzserek kiskátéját (most éppen az Aleister Crowley által újradózerolt szabadkőműves-klón Ordo Templi Orientis konzumokkultista edzéseire kattant rá), gyökeret vert a VNV Nation meg a Combichrist segítségével az underground ipari körökben, a szereplőválasztás sokszínűsége meg magáért beszél. (A kétségbeejtően megalapozatlan prágai Dűne-sorozat óta nem tudom Alec Newmant komolyan venni, heh heh.) Pearry szerint a sound design második lépcsőjénél tartanak a munkálatok, most adják hozzá a jelenetekhez az extra hangokat, ill. módosítják azok térbeli elhelyezkédését. (Egy korábbi bejegyzés szerint a mellékszereplők kéket hugyoznak majd a sikátorban, ezt a Coca-C*la pár évvel ezelőtti limitált szériás kék ipari limonádéjával is megcsinálta bárki, itt Heptoid izgalomtól remegő beszámolójára gondolok, filter se kellett hozzá.)
