synthespians on the rise: image metrics out of “uncanny valley”

Synthespians (Gibson’s version of personality constructs) are on the rise thanks to Image Metrics, the guys behind GTA’s animations. Their artificial construct, Emily (on the yt above) is controlled by a new system that takes facial control down to the pixel level - that, the extreme focus on the perfect timing of eye movements and the subtle imperfections and asymmetries make the constructs into real humans. Sites fantasize about chatbots and CG movies that pwn live-action ones. Yes please. Longer history on synthespians and idorus later, on the new version of PD. friday zen (reader version)

PinkTsunamii sends you all a MonicaBot of Doug Williams of Sketchwich. It might be just me but all these things really remind me of Tsutomu Nihei’s work (later volumes of Blame!, to mention just one). Doug has his own blog here which basically contains the same stuff that you can see on Sketch. Monica also has a head on a tray here (neatly named Lunch Art).

Oizys on the other hand is back with a Blade Runnerish BMW ad and Rivet’s various takes on the bunny motif. Amazing shit. Mustn’t forget about posting more bunnies in the next post.

blood death ivory: more news on angelspit, new mp3

Sydney-based duo ANGELSPIT (also inventors of rock) just started releasing digital snippets of music and artwork to promote their new album BLOOD DEATH IVORY. The album - which, according to one of the band’s blipverts - elaborates on the concept of beauty, that much we know - also available is the complete track list and now we have the first “bloodpack“: an assortment of one new track (Skinny Little Bitch), a wallpaper and a 10% discount web sale voucher. (Bloodpack available here, voucher’s valid from 01/05 until 15/05.)

Album design is done by DestroyX, photography by Helen White (who also did the sleeve & artwork photography for Krankhaus, so that’s a promise in itself) and you can expect more slashing surprises in the upcoming weeks. Skinny Little Bitch is one motherfucker of a stomper much in the vein of Angelspit and will probably be one nice addition to the live repertoire - one thing I really miss is some cringing lines of 303 and some more distortion!

ROCK!

angelspit blipverts: classic cyberpunk meme reinstated!

Sydney-based cyberpunk duo ANGELSPIT has a new take on blipverts. If blipverts mean anything to you, you probably are old and weary, as they were first introduced to science fiction fans back in 1987 in the series Max Headroom. Max Headroom was the first British (and as far as I know, also world-first) cyberpunk TV series about a reporter named Edison Carter. Carter works for a network called Channel 23 and he gets into trouble while uncovering things his bosses would like to keep in the private. One of these scandals is about the blipvert, a hi-speed visual medium that condenses advertisements into a few seconds, thus effectively killing people with the overload.

In the past 20 years anything in the ad scene that got related to or was called a blipvert was basically a brief advertisement, sometimes laced with subliminal effects. Wikipedia has more to say about that, check out Richi Jennings and the image-based spams with subliminal BUY BUY BUY messages.

As for what Angelspit sez: the cult movie Max Headroom used the term ‘Blipvert’ to describe a short and intense information-packed video that would make people explode. We are hoping ours will do the same. Angelspit Blipverts are designed to inform and inspire people to get active and be creative!
Only three YouTube videos (How to Write Lyrics, Songwriting, Destroying Bass) are available at the moment - if you dig tongue-in-cheek commentaries and love your mind being expanded (although these videos work much better for a younger audience), you gotta so love this. Max respect for Zoog & DestroyX.

trembled blossoms

Directed by the performance artist James Luna and based on James Jean’s Nouveau-esque wallpaper seen in the ad campaign, the film is an ambitious narrative fantasy depicting a cyber woman’s journey through a magical, illustrated forest. An army of CGI operatives were enlisted to show her morphing from a Lalique-like blossom, through a pastel coloured meadow and into a splendid, seductive glade, where she meets Pan. The fashion element is subtle yet cleverly handled. She begins as a sort of pale neuter cyborg wearing nothing but PRADA heels and then a mysterious character (a sci-fi stylist?) emerges from the trees and clothes her in the stand-out red and blue check sheath dress from the S/S ‘08 collection...
