otomata: automatize your ambient, refresh your techno
Otomata is a generative sequencer. It employs a cellular automaton type logic I’ve devised to produce sound events.
Each alive cell has 4 states: Up, right, down, left. at each cycle, the cells move themselves in the direction of their internal states. If any cell encounters a wall, it triggers a pitched sound whose frequency is determined by the xy position of collision, and the cell reverses its direction. If a cell encounters another cell on its way, it turns itself clockwise.
This set of rules produces chaotic results in some settings, therefore you can end up with never repeating, gradually evolving sequences. A series of interactions with Kinect's infrared structured light. With these images I was exploring the unique photographic possibilities presented by using a Microsoft Kinect as a light source. The Kinect - an inexpensive videogame peripheral - projects a pattern of infrared dots known as "structured light". Invisible to the eye, this pattern can be captured using an infrared camera. The Kinect uses the deformation of this dot pattern to derive 3D information about its subjects (an ability which has already spawned an explosion of incredible digital art). The actors in the trailer appear to be wearing white gloves - something that Mizuguchi's done in the past when showing Child of Eden's Kinect version at gaming events. This makes us wonder if white gloves are required. Mizuguchi tells Kotaku that white gloves are not required for Child of Eden, but wearing them can lead to "magic time". (via kotaku)

No experimentation this week (personal post coming up later as to the reason behind the no experimentation, the delay and the non-posting of the past weeks), only a few earfuls of some decent stuff that caught our attention this week.
